Packing Tips for International Travel
In just about 24 hours, I'm heading to Italy! I am so excited, I haven't been there in a few years and I cannot wait to see family and literally just travel. The last time I went, I think I was about 14 and I know that I'll experience things so much differently this time. I'm beyond excited, but definitely not that excited to pack... And yes, I still haven't packed, eek!! As organized as I like to think I am, I'm one of the biggest procrastinators ever and it never works in my favor, like ever. #realtalk - but on a positive note, I do have some tips on how to pack quickly, easily and without forgetting anything. International travel is a LOT different than domestic travel and so is packing. Between airport rules; weight of baggage, limitations, etc., it's difficult to know what to do and what to pack. I find it difficult to remember what I can bring in my carry-on specifically, and because of limitations I've come up with what I *hope* to be a helpful cheat sheet for packing for international travel:
First, it's most important to check with your airline's rules about baggage. Every airline differs a bit, and it's super important to be sure of what you can bring in terms of bag size (specifically carry-on size and amount of bags). Since room is limited regardless, make sure you have a purpose for everything you pack!
Clothing:
This is a hard one, because I'm one of those people who likes to pack everything in my closet - if only I could! :P I like to try and choose things that I'll be able to mix and match with so I can re-wear things and create different outfit combinations with one piece. Of course, the amount of clothing depends on what you'll be doing, the weather/climate and how long you'll be away. My general rule of thumb is an outfit per day plus one or two extra pieces per two outfits. Here's some of the pieces I'm taking and an example of re-wearing pieces for different combos with those pieces:
Colorblock Tank //
Striped Tee //
Two Tone Watch //
Denim Shorts //
Tory Burch Millers //
Black Maxi
Floral Kimono //
Tank Top //
White Jeans //
Tan Hat //
Kate Spade Bag //
RayBans
Here are some combinations to create with these 12 pieces; I chose these 12 because they're some of my favorites, and are the newer things I bought from my trip so they're still available online! : )
It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think the floral kimono with the shorts is my favorite - so versatile! I also almost always roll my clothes... It sounds sort of crazy, but it does help with wrinkling and is a huge space saver! I also throw in a couple of hangers so I have extra than what's provided at the hotel, etc.
Electronics:
Between converters and electronic cords (laptop, camera, phone, etc) it's SO hard to remember everything! Converters are so important and knowing the different wattage sizes for what you need is equally crucial. This set of converters is great for smaller things (phones, cameras) and you can even pick through a long list of countries. This converter is for larger things and has a larger wattage; it's universal and even has USB ports for extra charging!
Carry-On:
I'm hoping to share a picture or two on Instagram when my carry-on is actually packed, but here I am - procrastinating and not having a thing packed! But here's a list of things I always have in my carry-on, and yes - carry-on AND a "personal item" is allowed, so you can bring a purse too or computer bag, etc. I always take the biggest tote bag I own and fill it to the very top!
Passport Holder //
Travel Pillow //
MacBook Air Case //
Purell Wipes //
Monogrammed Keychain //
ID Holder and Clip //
Headphones //
Travel Bottles (for liquids) //
Shoe Bags //
Deodorant Wipes //
Sunglasses //
Mophie Power Station //
Travel Jewelry Case
I take a few of the shoes I pack with me in my carry-on; call me crazy, but I'm super paranoid about luggage and I like keeping my nicest shoes with me so these shoe/heel bags are perfect for travel and keep your shoes safe in your carry-on. I'm big on keeping things in smaller bags so it's easier to access things! I have a bag for my makeup, one for toiletries, electronics/plugs in one - you get the idea.
I know there's SO much more, and I could go on and on about packing, but these are my favorite tips and suggestions for your clothing and carry-on bags! Does anyone have other packing tips? I'd love to hear them - I need all the help I can get! ; )
