I've been getting to bed earlier, even if it's by 30 minutes. Even if I'm not asleep for an hour, if I'm in bed and can relax I've been able to fall asleep quicker and easier. The nights I've gotten in and to bed earlier than normal, I've gotten up earlier and haven't had as much of a problem. It's amazing how much of a difference such a small amount of time can make!
Although I can set my own hours, they have to be realistic. Being able to differentiate your work from your life isn't always easy, and I know first hand that I'm always thinking about post ideas, shoots, things I have to do or want to right about, etc. But you have to allow yourself to put the computer down and get out, after all that IS the beauty of being your own boss! Waking up earlier allows you to have more time during the day and at night to do what you want to - if that means writing a blog post or if it means going for a drink with a friend, knowing it's on your terms and because you can is essential! Getting things done earlier in the morning allows the rest of the day to be fairly flexible, and who doesn't want that?
Upon waking up, have some quiet "me time". Not only does waking up slowly and on your own, versus to a hundred snoozed alarms help you to wake up calmly but it gives you a chance to fully wake up. Some mornings are impossible, but I've been giving myself those extra few minutes and it helps tremendously! It even helps when I have to be up to get ready to be somewhere - even on a weekend. ;) In this time I'll usually listen to a few minutes of the news, answer a few texts or play a round of 1010, AKA my guilty pleasure.
Make a gradual change to get up earlier, as slow as you need to. Doing it slowly allows your body to adapt and doesn't make getting up earlier overwhelming. I learned this the hard way, LOL. I also realized very quickly that if I started waking up at 7 AM every day instead of 9 for example, it was only going to make me hate waking up early even more. I started setting an alarm for 10 minutes earlier every day and if there's one thing I'd suggest to wake up earlier, this is it! The earlier you're awake, the more control over the morning you have and that's a really great feeling, especially come noon.
Start your work with the simpler things. I'm a big believer in crossing off bigger tasks first, but girlfriend - I'm not doing much with my brain this early! I always try to prepare for each morning the night before and therefore am able to do the simpler things when I wake up. Promoting my newest blog post across social, catching up on Instagram, scheuduling pins, checking emails - these are the work tasks I CAN complete that early! Anyone else?!
Having quiet me time in the morning is HUGE for me. If I can't just lay in bed and not feel rushed before getting up, I definitely don't want to wake up. Thanks for the great tips!
ReplyDeleteI have ALWAYS been a morning person. It is so important too because I am able to be so productive while my husband is still sleeping! Hoping it keeps up after bebe W arrives!

I am SO not a morning person either! My goal is to get better at mornings and wake up earlier to practice yoga. Thank you for sharing these tips. I feel like I can really apply them to my own routine and become a better morning person.
ReplyDeleteI use to be a morning person and not so much now since I work from home. I love being able to sleep in but sometimes i can't get things done. So now I wake up at least by 630am so I can start my day by drinking coffee, checking my notifications on my phone, watch the news and then get blog things done.
ReplyDeleteI wake up early every morning to work, but the first thing I do is make myself a cup of tea. It's the perfect, quiet way to start my day.
ReplyDeleteI was always a night owl until this past winter when I interned for a morning radio show and had to wake up 3x a week at 3 am... let's say that changed me! ;-) Now I enjoy waking up early most days and being productive!

Great tips! As I have gotten older, I have slowly started waking up earlier and earlier too. I used to not be able to wake up before 11 or 10, but now I'm awake (almost) each morning before 8am.
ReplyDeleteQuiet time is huge for me! I like to workout too but once everyone else wakes up it's impossible, so using that as motivation helps a lot! Love this post!

ReplyDeleteI hit the ground running and start my day at 3:30-4:00am every morning with a workout! Best way to start the day!
ReplyDeleteI think the "having me time" is such an important part of getting up early. Before I go to work, I wake up at 5:15 and watch the news and have coffee until 6! Gets my mind in a good place xx
ReplyDeleteI am SO not a morning person, but I desperately want to be so that I have quiet time to get things done before my family gets up. These are some great tips that I plan to try!
ReplyDeleteGoing to bed early is KEY for me to get up early!!! I'm learning this more and more the older I get. Thanks for the helpful tips!
ReplyDeleteI seriously need to get to bed earlier haha I've been the worst at that!
ReplyDeleteAwesome tips, lady! I am a total night owl so getting up early can be difficult for me but I try my hardest.
ReplyDeleteI tend to stay up too late and wake up too early... which doesn't leave me much time to sleep! I need to be more productive with my early morning time to get more stuff done.
ReplyDeleteI want to get moving earlier in the morning but I'm such a night owl, so it's tough for me. I always get my second wind at like 11:30 and have to force myself into bed, haha.
ReplyDeleteSuch great tips! I get up naturally at 7-7:30 but work from bed until like 10 haha
ReplyDeleteI am not a morning person AT ALL! These are great tips to try and get up and get moving!
ReplyDeleteI definitely am not a huge fan of mornings either, so waking up gradually sounds like something that could work for me. Like you mentioned, I do enjoy mornings when I'm already up, but the getting out of bed part is the worst!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a morning person either, but I've been falling asleep earlier and waking up earlier too!
ReplyDeleteI am printing this! LOL! I need more sleep and I'm so much more productive when I get up earlier!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally frazzled for the rest of the day when I cannot have my quiet time for tea & breakfast.
ReplyDeleteMornings can be so rough, man! I'm out the door by 8 am every day for my internship this summer, so that 6am wakeup call can be very irritating. Something that helps me with waking up early is knowing that I've allotted myself ~30 minutes to drink coffee + eat breakfast before I head out. Food is always my motivation, haha!
ReplyDeleteWhen I have an hour or so to get my own work done before I get ready to go to my job I love it!
ReplyDeleteI've been in such a slump and waking up later and later. I needed this post. I need to wake up so much earlier because working a full time job plus blogging is killing me. I need to find more time in the morning to slowly wake up, respond to comments, and do small blogging tasks.
ReplyDeleteYes starting with simpler things is definitely a good way to start! I usually just relax for the first 30 minutes before getting out of bed. It's the best!
ReplyDeleteGetting to bed earlier holds so much weight in my morning routine. I definitely think subtle changes to your sleep schedule (like turning in for the night 30 min earlier than usual) go a long way!

I ALWAYS see a difference when heading to bed just a BIT earlier. It really works!
ReplyDeleteComing Up Roses
I agree, waking up just a tiny bit earlier every day makes it so much easier! I'm so bad at going to bed early, but I've had to go to bed as early as 10:00 most nights this week because I have to wake up at 5am every morning for work this summer!

I love this — I always find I'm more productive in the mornings, but I can't bring myself to get out of bed!
